During the Song dynasty, clothing was divided into two main categories: officials' garments and clothing for ordinary people.
Officials wore yuanlingpao (round-collared robe) with long, loose sleeves. Palace ladies followed Tang dynasty style but were influenced by Confucianism, resulting in a simpler, more conservative, and more traditional aesthetic.
Ordinary people were only allowed to wear white clothes or black attire. However, civilians often wore colorful garments disregarding the rules. Common clothing styles for women included beizi (shirt or jacket) paired with ru (top), qun (skirt), or ku (trousers). Zhu Xi's sacrificial and ceremonial apparel system emphasized the use of an overcoat, long skirt, and beizi for women.
Many clothing styles from the Song dynasty were adopted in the subsequent Yuan and Ming dynasties.
